University College Dublin
I'm a researcher and lecturer in statistics at University College Dublin. I use statistics to reconstruct ancestral trees of humans from their DNA to estimate historic population sizes hundreds of thousands of years ago.
I live in Dublin, but I’m from Glasgow. I have a PhD in Statistics and work at University College Dublin researching statistics. I love to play the piano, bake and run. I love parkrun! And I am learning Spanish on Duolingo, I have just hit 1000 days.

How I Use Maths In My Job:
I do statistics every day. I use a computer to do this. It’s in a statistical programming language that helps me to look for patterns in the data, make interesting plots and graphs and model the data. When we model the data we are looking for a mathematical relationship in the data.
I then write up reports of the analysis, saying what I did and why. I then interpret the results we get from the statistical model.
I also teach statistics to students in the university and love showing them how great statistics is!
Maths comes into my job every single day and its great fun!
I'm a statistician so my job is to look for patterns in data. This data could be anything! It could be who you voted for in the American election, what sport you like to play after school, what height you are or even your DNA.
My Typical Day
I have my eggs and cereal then head into the office. I get a coffee and chat to other researchers before we all head to our desks for a day of statistical analysis! We stop for lunch and a chat then do some more work before I head home for dinner and some exercise, gardening or baking!
What I'd do with the prize money
I would use the prize money to engage young people in maths and stats through fun videos online
I would use the money to buy a license for video editing. I love making videos about maths and stats to share with kids in school to help them understand maths. I have used Dax the dog in the past to help! See this video here.
